Jim Fregosi is being patient concerning the status of his contract talks for next year. He has no choice. ”Most organizations I`ve been with talk to you before the end of the season,” said Fregosi on the WMAQ Sox pregame show with Lorn Brown Wednesday. ”But if they want to wait until the end of the season, that`s fine with me.”
General Manager Larry Himes reiterated his stance: ”We`ve talked, and I told him we`d talk after the season.”
Himes said he decided against bringing up Ron Karkovice for September because he felt the young catcher had enough for 1987. ”He`s been through a difficult season,” Himes said. ”I told him to get ready to go to winter ball, if he wants to. We have a job for him.”
The Sox also plan to have Joel Davis pitch in winter ball.
Ozzie Guillen is getting antsy sitting on the bench. He missed his fourth straight game with a bad knee. ”I don`t think I ever missed more than two days in a row,” Guillen said. ”This is horrible.”
