Recent letters have lamented the possibility of a future in which only the rich have access to organ transplants.

In 1985, Illinois established the Organ Transplant Fund, a pool of funds through which the state could support organ transplants for those people with no or inadequate insurance.

However, as part of the state`s budget cuts, this fund has been cut in half. Insufficient funds remain to cover a full year of transplant activity. The time when the poor and the poorly insured cannot obtain organ transplants in Illinois may be here sooner than imagined, possibly before the end of the year.
