Only in Chicago! Only in Chicago would a unique, historic structure such as the McCarthy building be torn down to be replaced by yet another towering skyscraper.
In other cities, landmark status is sought after-in Chicago, it`s avoided at all costs. Developers, politicians and even The Chicago Tribune tell us that it`s just one small, unimportant building and that its demolition will benefit our great city. That`s what we were told when five of Louis Sullivan`s buildings, our beautiful old train stations and numerous other historic buildings were town down.
When will the pillage of our architectural treasures end? Will the just- one-more-in-the-name-of-progress-and-business philosophy end when there are no old buildings left?
