Richard Dotson took an early-morning flight back to Chicago Saturday so team physicians can check his ailing right shoulder. Trainer Herm Schneider believes the problem isn`t serious. ”It`s just a little sore,” said manager Jim Fregosi. ”He wasn`t going to pitch here anyway, so we thought it was best to get him checked out as soon as possible.”

They were dancing in the streets of Birmingham, Ala., Saturday. The Sox`s Double A team, the Birmingham Barons, took the Southern League title by beating Charlotte 4-0 in a rain-shortened seven-inning game. Birmingham won the series 3-1. Catcher Matt Merullo was the big star Saturday, collecting two hits, including a two-run homer. Reliever Kevin Renz picked up the victory.

The completion of the series means pitchers Jack McDowell, Adam Peterson and John Pawlowski will join the Sox when they return home Monday to play Minnesota.

Jose DeLeon picked up his fourth victory in five decisions in the Sox`s 5-1 victory over Seattle Saturday. DeLeon`s control has been a big factor. ”I`m pitching quicker,” DeLeon said. ”I`m taking the ball and throwing it, instead of walking all over the mound in between pitches. It`s helped.”

Seattle`s Mark Langston will continue his bid to become the Mariners` first 20-game winner when he faces the Sox Sunday. He`s 17-10.
