The White Sox aren`t going to waste any time giving Jack McDowell a chance to pitch. Their No. 1 draft pick will start Tuesday`s game against Minnesota`s 42-year-old Joe Niekro. He arrived at Comiskey Park Monday along with pitchers Adam Peterson and John Pawlowski from Double-A Birmingham.
”It`s better this way,” McDowell said. ”I don`t have time to think about things. I thought I`d be more nervous than I am. I got here and saw it`s just a bunch of guys playing ball. Of course, they`re the best players in the world.”
McDowell, 21, will make his major-league debut against 42-year-old Joe Niekro.
Ozzie Guillen said his ailing right knee felt better Monday. But he sat out once again with Fred Manrique playing in his place. ”It`s a day-to-day thing,” said manager Jim Fregosi.
Fregosi still was marveling over Floyd Bannister`s one-hitter over Seattle Sunday. ”The amazing thing was that he struck out 10 guys and only threw 104 pitches,” Fregosi said.
