So the Soviets sentence Mathias Rust to four years in a labor camp. Such is gratitude, Russian style.
Whatever Rust`s motivations may have been in flying to Moscow and landing in Red Square, he ended up doing the Soviets a big favor. At no cost to the USSR, nor any harm to its citizens, he performed a test of Soviet border, countryside and capital city defenses (exposing their weaknesses) that would have been impossible to duplicate with the same freedom from bias or rigging. In effect, a double-blind study, par excellence.
They should thank him, strike off a medal for him and send him on his way.
