Ivan Calderon will go in the hospital after the season to find out what is causing a strain in his left shoulder.
Sox player personnel director Al Goldis naturally was beaming over McDowell`s performance. He`s also been raving about the Sox`s No. 2 draft pick, Brent Knackert.
Goldis believes he has as much potential as McDowell. Knackert walked only four batters in 42 innings for the rookie league team in Sarasota, Fla.
”He`s a quality pitcher,” Goldis said.
The Sox were encouraged after Richard Dotson played catch Wednesday. Dotson is out with a sore shoulder. ”It looks like he`s throwing much looser,” said manager Jim Fregosi.
Third-base coach Doug Rader is expected to be released from the hospital Thursday after undergoing elbow surgery Tuesday.
