Cubs manager Frank Lucchesi has the utmost respect for the Cards` Whitey Herzog. ”There are managers who are great strategists, managers who can handle the media, guys who can handle the offense. Whitey Herzog, to me, is a full manager. He can handle players, he`s a very good strategist, he`s a full manager. I put two managers in the big leagues at the top of that category-Chuck Tanner and Whitey.”

Rookie infielder Paul Noce received his first start Thursday against the Phillies since being recalled from Iowa on Sept. 4.

”I`m glad I finally got into a game. It`s been three weeks since I last got into a game as a starter,” said Noce. ”I hope they didn`t forget what kind of job I did earlier in the season when I was up here. I hope I get more than just one game. Maybe the last week or so I`ll get to play a lot.”

Cubs second baseman Ryne Sandberg celebrated his 28th birthday Friday.
