The Cubs traded right-handed reliever Dickie Noles to the Detroit Tigers Monday for a player to be named later. Noles, 30, was signed by the Cubs as a free agent on April 6. He has a 4-2 record with two saves and a 3.50 earned-run average in 41 games. He worked 64 1/3 innings, allowing 59 hits and 31 runs (25 earned) with 27 walks and 33 strikeouts.

Since descending from his perch in the press box as the Cubs` eye-in-the-sky, Cubs interim manager Frank Lucchesi said he has made several observations.

”The one thing that you find out down here on the field, as opposed to in the booth, is that you find out about the player`s makeup, about his desire, his attitude,” said Lucchesi.

Darryl Strawberry stole his 30th base Monday, joining teammate Howard Johnson in the 30-30 club. Each has over 30 homers and 30 stolen bases to become the first teammates to achieve that distinction in the same year.

Cub interim manager Frank Lucchesi believes 21-year-old Greg Maddux would benefit from pitching in winter ball.

”The more that kid gets on the mound, the better,” he said.
