Indy-car driver Roberto Guerrero, hospitalized more than two weeks after suffering a head injury during a test run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has regained consciousness. John White, a spokesman for Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, said Guerrero was still ”mildly disoriented.”

Britain`s Peter Elliott and Kirsty Wade, fresh off victories in last Sunday`s Westminster Mile in London, captured the men`s and women`s divisions of the Mercedes Mile on Fifth Avenue in New York. Both employed the same tactics:

letting others lead early before charging from behind in the closing stages. Elliott, timed in 3 minutes 53.52 seconds, edged Marcus O`Sullivan (3:53.95)

of Ireland and Jim Spivey (3:54.04) of Glen Ellyn, Ill. Wade was timed in 4:22.70, easily beating Scotland`s Yvonne Murray (4:25.59) and Canada`s Lynn Williams (4:26.99).

Arnie Schraeder and Susan Schneider won their respective classes in the Milwaukee Journal Al`s Run, a fundraiser started by former Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire 10 years ago. Schraeder`s winning time on the 5-mile course was 23:25, while Schneider won her fourth title in 26:51. Organizers said a record 29,686 runners and walkers took part in the race.

Italian shot-putter Alessandro Andrei avenged his defeat at the World Track and Field Championships by handing Werner Guenthoer of Switzerland his first loss after 15 victories during the outdoor season at an international meet in Kuessnacht, Switzerland. Andrei had a heave of 70 feet 11 3/4 inches. Guenthoer was second at 69-11.

The 1987 Pan American Games cost Indianapolis and Marion County about $1 million, figures released by city and county officials indicated. The biggest expense was $508,283 for Indianapolis Police Department overtime, City Controller Fred Armstrong said.

Carl Lewis is the world`s most expensive track star, with a price of up to $35,000 per meet, the Paris newspaper L`Equipe reported. An informal survey by the paper showed 400-meter hurdler Edwin Moses and Moroccan distance runner Said Aouita also earn more than $20,000 per competition.

Edmonton Oilers goalie Andy Moog is leaving the defending Stanley Cup champions and joining the Canadian Olympic hockey team. Moog became a free agent with compensation when his contract expired at the end of last season. When the Oilers could not arrange a trade with another National Hockey League club, Moog said he decided to join the Olympic team. . . . Lane MacDonald scored the game-winning goal midway through the first period as Team USA defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 in Detroit for its first exhibition victory over an NHL club. The Wings peppered Team USA goalie Chris Terreri with 20 shots in the second period but couldn`t convert.

The on-again, off-again heavyweight boxing showdown between British rivals Frank Bruno and Joe Bugner was back on again when promoter Barry Hearn said the Australian-based Bugner had agreed to terms. The fight will take place Oct. 24 at Tottenham Hotspur soccer stadium in London, with an expected crowd of 40,000 and possible profits of $3.3 million, Hearn said.

Derrick Lewis, who was dismissed from the University of Maryland for academic failings following the spring semesters of 1985 and 1987, has brought his grade-point average to an acceptable level and will be eligible to play basketball this season, according to the Diamondback, Maryland`s student newspaper. Lewis was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference choice last year after averaging a team-high 19.6 points a game.

Brazil`s Nelson Piquet grabbed the pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix with a time of 1:22.461 over the 2.621-mile course in Jerez De La Frontera. He had an average speed of 114.423 miles an hour. That knocked Nigel Mansell of Britain off the pole after he couldn`t improve on his Friday time of 1:23.081. . . . Greg Pickett broke the Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International track record in qualifying for Sunday`s Kodak Copier 500 IMSA Camel GTO event. Pickett was clocked at 113.193 m.p.h. in his Corvette, shattering Darin Brassfield`s 2-year-old track record by more than 4 m.p.h. . . . Rick Mast, who scored his first career NASCAR Grand National victory a week ago at Dover, Del., made it two wins in a row with a triumph at the Nationwise 150 race in Martinsville, Va. Mast took the lead from Brett Bodine on Lap 109 and held off challenges from Jimmy Hensley the remainder of the race.

Sportscasters Jim McKay and the late Clem McCarthy will be inducted into the American Sportscasters Association`s Hall of Fame on Dec. 3.
