Rafael Palmeiro`s 14th home run of the year and Keith Moreland`s 27th Sunday were the 208th and 209th of the season by the Cubs. It was the most homers hit by a National League team since the 1956 Reds hit 221.

Jody Davis was socked with a $300 fine from the National League office for being ejected and allegedly bumping plate umpire Randy Marsh in a Wrigley Field game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Sept. 25.

The following Cubs established career highs this season (minimum two years of major league service): Andre Dawson-49 homers, 137 RBIs; Leon Durham-27 homers; Jerry Mumphrey-13 homers; Moreland-27 homers; Manny Trillo-8 homers;

Bobby Dernier-8 homers.

The following Cubs reached career milestones this season: Dawson-250th homer; Davis-100th homer; Moreland-100th homer and 1,000th hit; Ryne Sandberg-1,000th hit and 200th steal; Mumphrey-1,400th hit; Trillo-1,500th hit; Dernier-200th steal; Jim Sundberg-1,400th hit and 1,798th game caught (fourth all-time);

Rick Sutcliffe-100th victory and 1,000th strikeout. Lee Smith-150th and 175th saves.

Besides the September callups, the Cubs used nine players this season who did not have one full year of service before spring training. Those players were Mike Brumley, David Martinez, Paul Noce, Palmeiro, Drew Hall, Les Lancaster, Greg Maddux, Jamie Moyer and Bob Tewksbury.

With 49 homers, Dawson had the highest total in the league since George Foster hit 52 in 1977.

c8 The Cubs hit 13 homers in Montreal this season, surpassing their single-season high of 11 set at Olympic Stadium in 1982.

c8 Montreal`s Tim Raines had a career-high 18 homers this season.

”I always felt I had the power to hit the ball out of the ballpark,”

said Raines. ”I thought it would be later in my career year that I`d hit more home runs. Maybe I`m getting a little stronger as I get older.”
