Asked if his hitting 50 homers could enhance his chances of being selected as league MVP, Dawson replied: ”It could. There are people who have different feelings about the MVP award . . . with us being in last place. I`ve been runner-up twice. If it doesn`t happen this year, chances are it won`t ever happen. I won`t let it bother me. I just played as hard as I could and hope all of that other stuff takes care of itself.”
Pirates manager Jim Leyland said he feels confident general manage Syd Thrift can trade for players to help the team.
”I think Syd has shown that he`s not afraid of who he trades with,”
Leyland said. ”One thing I found out a long time ago is that you can`t sit around and dream about players you don`t have.
”We like to work with what we`ve got and if we can come up with that guy, great. If not, we`ve got to go to combat with what we`ve got. That`s the way it is.”
