Ron Hassey has been told by the White Sox that they will not pick up the option on his contract for 1988. Hassey still could end up with Sox. The catcher earned $560,000 this year. By not offering him a contract, he becomes a free agent. The Sox could sign him at a lower price.
”I expected it,” Hassey said. ”The injuries I`ve had have put a damper on everything. The doors aren`t closed. They`re still going to offer me a contract. I have no bad feelings.”
When asked if he would like to rejoin the Yankees, who need catching help, Hassey said, ”I`ll have to look at all the highways.”
Pitching coach Dick Bosman flew to Virginia after the game. He will have his ankle operated on Monday.
Ivan Calderon and Dave LaPoint will be given arthrograms in their shoulders Monday. Calderon`s shoulder has been ailing for a couple of years, while LaPoint has had trouble between starts.
Sox among the final American League leaders: Calderon with 38 doubles, third behind Milwaukee`s Paul Molitor (41) and Boston`s Wade Boggs (40); and Gary Redus with 52 stolen bases, third behind Seattle`s Harold Reynolds (60) and Kansas City`s Willie Wilson (59).
