Denver Bronco receivers dropped six passes, which was a good thing for the Detroit Lions. Otherwise the Lions` 34-0 loss would have been even worse. Three of the drops came during one series early in the second quarter and stalled a drive, which ended on a missed field goal. Mark Jackson, uncovered in the left flat, dropped one. Clarence Kay couldn`t hang on after breaking free downfield. And Gene Lang muffed a short pass to the right side.
But the most glaring drop came early in the third quarter when Vance Johnson broke into the clear and appeared certain to score on what would have been a 55-yard pass from John Elway. The ball slipped through his hands and bounced off his knee at the 7-yard line.
”I wanted to crawl under the carpet,” Johnson said. ”That was the worst thing that ever happened in my life. I was so embarrassed. I was going to catch the ball and step into the end zone. It was a lack of concentration. It was an easy pass, and those are the kind you can`t stand to drop.”
”I`m glad it wasn`t in a tight game on a crucial play,” said Elway. ”I told them I knew they were trying, and I just asked them not to get mad at me when I miss them.”
Jackson attributed the drops to a ”Halloween jinx. It`s a hard catch to make when you`re all alone.”
They said it-Atlanta coach Marion Campbell after the Falcons, who are 2-5, lost to the New Orleans Saints 38-0: ”I hope they get as mad as I am right now. We don`t have to worry about standings or statistics. These players have to worry about their careers.”
