Sen. William Proxmire (D., Wis.), chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, said Tuesday that margin requirements for financial futures trading should be set by the Federal Reserve Board. Margin requirements for financial futures are set by the exchanges where they are traded and generally range from 7 to 15 percent and are overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. The Fed regulates margin requirements on stocks, set at 50 percent.
