San Francisco 49ers General Manager John McVay says wide receiver Carl Monroe`s release had nothing to do with his arrest on a charge of being under the influence of a drug. Monroe, 27, was arrested by San Jose police Sunday.

Lorrie Nichols of Algonquin and Karen Ellingsworth of Des Plaines averaged 232 to tie for the first-round lead in Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Fair Lanes Classicin Englewood, Colo. They each had 1,394 pins. Jan Schmidt of Winthrop Harbor was fifth at 1,375. . . . Norm Duke rolled a 300 game to take the first-round lead in the True Value Open in Indianapolis. He had 1,464 pins, 35 more than Steve Jaros of Bolingbrook.
