Former heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Wolcott, 73, was in stable condition after undergoing surgery. Officials at Howard University Hospital in Washington didn`t say what kind of surgery Wolcott had.
Dennis DiVenuta, an attorney for Bobby Czyz, has asked the International Boxing Federation to invalidate last month`s light-heavyweight title bout, contending referee Carlos Padilla erred in overseeing the fight. Czyz lost the title to Charles Williams.

Sandy Lyle, Jose-Maria Olazabal and Nick Faldo led a European team to a 7-5 victory over U.S. in the first round of the World Championship of Golf in Inagi, Japan. Lyle defeated Lanny Wadkins 68-72, Olazabal edged Simpson 68-69 and Faldo beat Curtis Strange 70-73. Bernhard Langer and American Mark Calcavecchia tied at 67. American winners were Payne Stewart, who downed Ian Woosnam 68-71, and Tom Kite, who beat Ken Brown 68-71. Greg Norman beat Toru Nakamura by seven strokes, 67-74, as an Australia-New Zealand team tied Japan 6-6. The two best teams on the first three days compete Sunday for the $360,000 first prize.
Lorrie Nichols of Algonquin led Linda Urbanek by 95 pins after the fourth round of the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour Fair Lanes Classic in Englewood, Colo. Nichols had 6,082 pins. Urbanek was one pin ahead of Karen Ellingsworth of Des Plaines. . . . Ron Palombi Jr. led Steve Cook by 161 pins after the fourth round of the True Value Professional Bowlers Association Open in Indianapolis. Palombi had 6,020 pins.
