Paul Gapp, in his recent article, denigrates the top of the 190 S. LaSalle Building, saying: ” . . . in Chicago, as 190 proves, caricature wilts almost instantly under the fire of true architecture and greatness.” Looking east from the 30th floor of the Mercantile Exchange, I (among others) find the top of 190 quite appealing and refreshing-a touch of realism mixed with nostalgia, and ingenuity in daring to be different in a downtown world of conformity-flat tops (topped with air-conditioners) of glass and steel whose only fire is in the sun`s reflection.
