Santa Fe Southern Pacific Corp. again averted a nationwide strike that would shut down its system by temporarily delaying the sale of its aging Toledo, Peoria & Western line. The Railway Labor Executives` Association, a consortium representing 17 unions at Santa Fe that has threatened a walkout if the 267-mile line is sold, said it would not strike as long as the status quo is maintained. Santa Fe, which had originally planned to sell the line Wednesday, said it ”will probably be a matter of several weeks before we would be ready to close the sale.” Santa Fe announced postponement of the sale after U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber rejected a request for a temporary restraining order to prevent the strike.
