Berry said. ”Nobody in this business is indispensable, and trades are part of this business. I`m sure Irving understands the principle and I`m sure he understands that I have to do what`s best for the team. I can`t comment any further.”

Norway`s Ingrid Kristiansen led from start to finish in Monaco in winning the women`s 15-kilometer road race world championships in a world-best time of 47 minutes 17 seconds. The time, which bettered fellow Norwegian Grete Waitz`s 1984 mark of 47:53, gave Kristiansen, 31, world-best times in the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, 15 kilometers and marathon.

North Central, paced by Brad Todden`s fifth-place finish, won the NCAA Division III men`s cross-country meet in Holland, Mich. The Cardinals edged runner-up Wisconsin-La Crosse by 11 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the women`s team title. . . . Edinboro (Pa.) won the men`s title and Cal Poly of San Luis Obispo (Calif.) took the women`s competition in the Division II championships at Evansville, Ind.

East German Andre Hoffmann won the 1,500-meter race in a men`s World Cup speedskating meet in Heerenveen, The Netherlands, while South Korea`s Ki Tae Bae won the 500-meter sprint. Hoffmann clocked 1:55.12, just ahead of fellow countryman Peter Adelberg, who finished in 1:55.27. Ki covered the 500 meters in 37.32, and Soviet speedskater Konstantin Kharitonov was second in 37.59. . . . In Berlin, East Germans placed 1-2-3 in the opening races of the women`s World Cup season, sweeping the top three places in both events. Christa Rothenburg set a course record of 40.38 to win the 500-meter race, beating archrival Karin Kania. Kania came back to win the 1,500-meter race by nearly

Bill Venturini, the Chicago driver with the only all-female crew in professional racing, won the crash-filled ARCA 500-kilometer stock-car race at Atlanta International Raceway and wrapped up his first Permatex series championship. Venturini averaged 119.482 miles an hour in the 204-lap event.

Mark Vermette scored two goals to lead Lake Superior to a 5-2 victory over Illinois-Chicago in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game at the UIC Pavilion. Jeff Nelson and Darin Bannister scored for UIC (4-7-1). Lake Superior is 10-2-2.

Shirley Cey, the mother of former Cub and Dodger third baseman Ron Cey, was tied up and robbed at her home in Tacoma, Wash. Police said two robbers stole cash, ransacked the house and removed from Mrs. Cey`s fingers two diamond rings valued at nearly $11,000.

Four top golfers from the U.S. and Europe will compete in two lucrative South African events, including a million-dollar, winner-take-all tournament. Bernhard Langer of West Germany, Nick Faldo of Britain and Americans Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins will play in a four-man ”skins” tournament with a $360,000 purse Nov. 28-29. The same four also will be in the eight-man field for the Million Dollar Challenge starting Dec. 3 at the Sun City resort-and-casino complex. The rest of the field has not been announced, although South Africans Mark McNulty and David Frost are expected to compete.
