Steeler coach Chuck Noll hinted his team may take matters into its own hands. ”We`re not going to make a big deal out of it, be we may have to handle this ourselves. We play them again (Dec. 19 in Houston). We may go spearing ourselves. That usually brings it to everybody`s attention.” The Steelers aren`t the only ones complaining about the Oilers. After San Francisco`s Nov. 8 game with Houston, 49er tight end Russ Francis said, ”They spear, they eye-gouge, they body-slam. They`re just like professional wrestlers.” . . . Cincinnati QB Boomer Esiason took a heavy physical beating in Sunday`s loss to Pittsburgh, but his postgame medical examination didn`t reveal the major source of his pain. When asked by reporters about his condition, he said: ”I`ve got a broken heart, that`s about it.” The Bengals are 3-7 after 10 games for the third time this decade, but seldom if ever has a team been so stunned to be in such a fix. ”This is probably the lowest point of my football career,” said Esiason. ”I`ve never been through anything like this in my life. Everybody talks about how it builds character (to be challenged to fight back from losing), but I`d give back a little character right now for a win. This team has really, really had a tough emotional time of it.”
