Alan E. Sohn, in a Nov. 11 letter, quotes from the Palestine National Covenant to show that the PLO calls for the destruction of Israel. This is a distortion of the facts, for whereas in 1967 the PLO may have called for the return of all of Palestine to its indigenous people (Sohn`s ”so-called Palestinians”), the PLO in 1977 declared that the Palestine National Covenant would not serve as the basis for relations between Israel and a Palestinian nation.
Moreover, in October, 1977, the PLO endorsed a joint Soviet-American statement calling for the ”termination of the state of war and establishment of normal peaceful relations” between Israel and its neighbors, thus acknowledging the right of Israel to exist.
