Miller Barber and Nancy Lopez combined for their second straight 8-under- par 63 Sunday for a 54-hole record total of 22-under 191 to win the Mazda Champions tournament in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The winners divided $500,000 of the $850,000 purse. Arnold Palmer and Colleen Walker, who led Barber and Lopez by one stroke after the second round, finished second with a final-round 67 for a 194 total. The turning point came when Palmer and Walker each double-bogeyed the par-4 ninth hole. ”We didn`t make a bogey all tournament, then a double-bogey cost us the tournament,” Palmer said. ”One hole jumped up and grabbed us. It was devastating.”
Promising to be aggressive in the final round, Clark Burroughs kept his word by making birdies on five of the first eight holes to win the TPA National Championship by four shots in Orlando. Burroughs had a final-round 69 for a 72-hole total of 14-under 272. He won $20,000. Robert Makoski took second after closing with a 67.
Stan Humphries passed for three touchdowns and ran for another as Northeast Louisiana defeated Marshall 43-42 Saturday night in the NCAA Division I-AA championship game in Pocatello, Idaho. The Indians trailed 42-28 early in the fourth quarter after Marshall quarterback Tony Petersen (28 of 54, 474 yards, 4 TDs) picked apart the Northeast Louisiana defense for three third-quarter TDs. Humphries (26 of 43, 436 yards) hit Kenneth Johnson on a 10-yard scoring pass early in the fourth quarter, then found Jackie Harris for the 2-point conversion. Humphries` 2-yard TD run with 7:19 left tied the score, and Teddy Garcia`s extra point won it.
Tulane fans began chanting ”Traitor,” in reference to coach Mack Brown late in the Green Wave`s 24-12 loss to Washington in the Independace Bowl. Brown became the new head coach at North Carolina on Sunday.
In the wake of a published report in the Columbus Dispatch saying Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry is one of the top contenders for the Ohio State job, DeBerry`s boss, Col. John Clune, said the rumor is doubtful. ”Protocol is the athletic director at a school usually calls the athletic director where the coach they want is, and nobody has called me from Ohio State,” said Clune. . . . Light-heavyweight boxer Bobby Frankham, who had his British license taken away for punching a referee in the ring, thinks he can continue fighting in the United States. Frankham told the News of the World he still has a permit to box in the U.S., where he figures the rules governing boxers` licenses are not so strict.
