Mass for Edith Johnstone Hartnett, 89, will be said at 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Name Cathedral, 735 N. State St. Mrs. Hartnett, who died at home Friday, was a fashion buyer known professionally as Edith Johnstone. She was honored as the ”Buyer of the Year” in 1971 by the Fashion Sales Guild in New York City. Women`s Wear Daily acclaimed her as the first buyer from outside New York ever chosen for the award. Mrs. Hartnett began her career in 1924 as a buyer for The Martha Weathered Misses Shop at Oak Street and Michigan Avenue and worked there until Martha Weathered`s death in 1942. She then became buyer-manager of the Designers Shop at Charles A. Stevens and Co. on State Street, where she worked until retiring in 1972. Mrs. Hartnett`s late husband, B. Emmet Hartnett, was a former chairman of the Chicago Board of Zoning Appeals under Mayor Richard J. Daley. She is survived by her son, B. Emmet; 2 daughters, Mary Gagen and Phyllis Nicholson; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren.
