It is distressing to note that collections in Salvation Army kettles have fallen off, presumably due to the Bakker affair.
Early in my professional career I assisted in the audit of the Atlanta headquarters of the Army. Since then my contacts with the local headquarters have reinforced my opinion: The Salvation Army gives meticulous care to monies received. Its personnel are honest, hardworking, capable people who are underpaid. I urge that readers do not put coins into their kettles-folded dollar bills fit nicely. (Of course, gold coins are acceptable.)
