Freshman Lucis Reece of Cairo, Ill., has been declared academically ineligible for the remainder of Northwestern`s 1987-88 basketball season, the university`s athletic department announced Friday. Because of several key injuries on the team, the 6-foot-5-inch, 220-pound forward had started 10 games this season for the Wildcats and averaged 4.9 points.

Hana Mandlikova became an Australian citizen on New Year`s Day, vowing never again to play tennis for her native Czechoslovakia despite being named to its 1988 Olympic and Federation Cup teams. After the ceremony in Sydney, Mandlikova said: ”I feel like I gave a lot to the Czech Federation. I really feel like I want to do something for the Australians-I want to represent them . . . because I love this country, and I feel like I am at home.” Mandlikova married Sydney restaurateur Jan Sedlak last year.

Top-seeded Pam Shriver of the U.S. lost only nine games in two matches to advance to the semifinals of the Women`s Tennis Classic in Brisbane, Australia. Countrywoman Patty Fendick was the tournament`s surprise, capturing another semifinal berth. Shriver beat Radka Zrubakova of Czechoslovakia 6-3, 6-2 in her opening match, carried over from a rain delay Thursday, then swept West Germany`s Claudia Porwik 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinal. Shriver is to play third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch in one semifinal Saturday, while 11th-seeded Jana Novotna of Czechoslovakia will take on unseeded Fendick in the other semifinal.

Free agent Paul Molitor and his agent have backed off on their demand for a three-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. The agent, Ron Simon, described the move as a major concession. ”We decided to explore a two-year contract with the understanding we`d have to receive major concessions on their part,” Simon said.

Finland`s Matti Nykaenen came from behind in the second round to take the second meet of the Four Hill ski-jumping tournament in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, West Germany, with 212.4 points. Nykaenen, the World Cup leader with five victories, jumped 339.5 feet on his first ride and put away the victory with a 332.92 jump. Swedish teenager Staeffan Taellberg was runner-up with jumps of 328 and 321.4 feet for 200.1 points.

Australian millionaire Alan Bond, the financial muscle behind Australia`s America`s Cup victory in 1983, will not challenge for the trophy in 1988, a spokesman for his syndicate said in Perth, Australia.

Former Ohio State football coach Earle Bruce said he would like to be considered for the coaching position at Arizona State-a job that became vacant when John Cooper accepted Bruce`s old job. In an interview broadcast by NBC during halftime of the Fiesta Bowl, Bruce also said he would like to be considered for the vacancy at SMU. ”I`m unemployed, I`m looking for work,”

Bruce said. ”I would consider any job offer right now.”

Wayne Webb of Waco, Tex., with a pinfall of 9,674, led the way into Saturday`s stepladder finals of the ARC Alameda (Calif.) Open bowling tournament. Others in the finals are Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Stockton, Calif., 9,613; Ernie Schlegel of Vancouver, Wash., 9,594; Harry Sullins of Sterling Heights, Mich., 9,479; and Mike Jasnau of Wichita, Kan., 9,454.
