NutraSweet Co. said it will petition the Food and Drug Administration to grant its new fat substitute, Simplesse, status as a ”generally regarded as safe” product. NutraSweet, a division of Monsanto Co., incurred the FDA`s wrath earlier this week when it launched Simplesse amid much ballyhoo without first running it by the FDA. While NutraSweet said earlier in the week it expected to market Simplesse within 18 months, Skokie-based NutraSweet declined Friday to estimate if, or how long, the petition process might delay marketing the product.
