Within hours of his resignation, the media depicted Coach Mike White and his University of Illinois football program as a winning combination that had won the competitive respect of the Big 10 conference. ”But,” the media eventually told their audience, something went awry.
I applaud The Tribune sports writer Bob Verdi`s Jan. 21 column for being the first news article/commentary to point out that the ”but” was the crucial element of the White resignation story. Verdi portrayed the football organization, as well as the upper echelon of Illini athletics, for what it apparently is: an insidious, beguiling program that historically has declined to follow lax NCAA rules.
