The Conference Board said its seasonally adjusted index of help-wanted advertising fell sharply in December, to 155 from 162 in November. However, the index remained well above its level of 138 in December, 1986. ”The evidence is a little more convincing that the yearlong trend of rising labor demand stopped abruptly in the wake of the October stock market crash,” said Kenneth Goldstein, an economist for the business-supported research group.
