Reading about Sen. Simon`s ”comfort factor” brought to mind a visit recently with an aide in the senator`s office. It was just prior to the March for Life in Washington, D.C.
She affirmed Simon was brought up in a missionary home, opposes abortion, thinks it`s wrong and would not agree to a member of his family having one.
Then she added that in today`s culture and with prevailing voter attitudes, he votes pro-choice in the Senate.
Very quickly my comfort factor with Mr. Simon waned.
I wonder how he would have voted on slavery, civil rights, women`s suffrage, etc. when those issues were current and the cultural climate contrary to his personal convictions.
It`s difficult to be comfortable with hypocrisy.
