In Alfred Borcover`s column Jan. 24 he implied that new airline carry-on luggage restrictions were being imposed as a result of inconveniences suffered by flight attendants. The Association of Flight Attendants would not waste its resources to lobby for these regulations if they were not a matter of safety. Studies have shown that in a crash, carry-on items break loose, striking and injuring people and blocking exits. If it were a matter of mere inconvenience for flight attendants, the new carry-on regulations would not have been enacted.

SMOKING AND FLYING
DATELINE: CHICAGO Why not let smokers find out what to do for four hours on a plane that has no smoking instead of nonsmokers trying to cope with their smoke? Smokers have clinics to help them stop smoking, but there are no clinics for nonsmokers on how to sit next to a smoker and not get sick. If I go to Los Angeles, I`ll have to take two two-hour flights (on which smoking is not allowed) instead of one four-hour flight.

STATEN ISLAND
DATELINE: ELKHART, IND. Regarding the article on Staten Island, N.Y. (Jan. 31): The author forgot to visit Wagner College on Grimes Hill. At one time it was the estate of the Cunard family of Cunard shipping lines. There is a lovely view from atop the hill.

TRAVELING WITH KIDS DATELINE: OAK PARK I am interested in reading more about traveling with children (Feb. 7 Travel section). As an older mother with a toddler (17 months) I have been accustomed to travel, singly and with my husband. Finding a ”family-type vacation” is a whole new world and so many ”family” vacation spots are not what we have in mind. I`d like more information on cruises, nice resorts and European travel.

My Sunday dinner can wait. Your article on vacations with kids is great. More! I have children 4, 12 and 14 years old. This age difference also presents a problem. Perhaps some suggestions. Please make this an on-going series. Summer will be here soon.
