Why are blacks continually being asked to ”settle” for crumbs? Your editorial of Feb. 19, ” . . . And don`t just say no on the Ryan,” is a perfect example of the ”give a man a fish and he eats for a day” theory.

Maybe employing more blacks in the labor force would benefit more black families directly, immediately. But awarding more contracts to black-owned firms will constitute ”teaching a man to fish so he eats for a lifetime.”

Fairness in awarding of contracts throughout the city and state will greatly benefit and encourage more black families, not for a day but for a lifetime.
