Mayor Sawyer`s recent remarks regarding Harold Washington`s commitment to the continuity of black leadership in Chicago were quite disconcerting. Previously, I had considerable admiration for Sawyer, and his intentions. Nonblacks, all of whom are, themselves, some type of minority, are instantly branded as racists if they so much as acknowledge a difference in

pigmentation.

Were a Caucasian to make a statement similar to Sawyer`s, he would be castigated by the sanctimonious hypocrites who well understand the political wisdom of doing so.
