Michael Kilian`s excellent article ”Elevated station,” describing the renovation of the Washington, D.C., Union Station, contained a glaring and unfortunate error.

His statement that Teddy Roosevelt ”might be put out that there are no more trains to places like Lincoln, Neb.” shows Kilian`s lack of knowledge about modern rail transportation. Every evening, at suppertime, one can board Amtrak`s Capital Ltd., spend a restful night and then after a change of trains in Chicago arrive in Lincoln, Neb., the next evening on Amtrak`s California Zephyr.

Amtrak most certainly could be better if it had the level of government support that our highways and airlines receive, but it does provide a convenient, comfortable and safe alternative means of traveling.
