Legislation is currently before Congress to deal with the crucial issue of plastic, undetectable handguns. In December, the U.S. Senate voted on an amendment offered by Senators Strom Thurmond (R., S.C.) and Howard Metzenbaum (D., Ohio) to prohibit the sale, manufacture, importation and possession of these undetectable weapons. This bill has the support of every major law enforcement organization in the country.
I would like to commend Sen. Paul Simon for cosponsoring this vital legislation. Plastic, undetectable handguns will put us all at risk. Although the measure was narrowly defeated, 47-42, support continues to build for its passage. My hope is that opponents of the bill will reconsider their position.
