Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The last time we visited King Richard`s Faire, that summertime Renaissance festival near the Wisconsin line, we encountered a man covered in dirt.

”I`m the mud eater,” he said. ”Give me a quarter.”

We handed him a few coins and tried to move on.

Before we could escape he took a handful of mud and began munching.

That is one of the reasons we will not be present at the auditions for this year`s faire. They are being held tomorrow and Tuesday at the Theater Building, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. (Those interested can call 472-6550.) And though one would be likely to encounter some of the traditional talents who make the faire one of the area`s best summer events-actors, magicians, jugglers, musicians-we are not eager for another encounter with a mud eater.

But, we wondered in a conversation with one of the people involved with putting on the faire, what exactly is it that would make someone do this.

”They have to want to get into show business real bad,” he said.
