Eighty-nine Illinois students are among 1,800 high school seniors selected nationwide to receive $2,000 scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corp. announced Wednesday.
Sixty-seven winners are from the Chicago area. Four Northwest Indiana students also are among the recipients, who will each receive a single, $2,000 payment when they enter the college of their choice.
The 1,800 Merit Scholars are among more than 6,000 high school seniors in this year`s competition who are being awarded scholarships worth more than $23 million for undergraduate study. On April 7, nearly 1,400 students were awarded corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships. About 2,800 winners of college-sponsored scholarships, which must be used at the colleges financing them, will be announced in May.
