Japanese companies are leading an apparent surge to buy new computer hardware and software in 1988, a trend that many feel could give them a competitive advantage in a variety of fields.
According to Datamation and Price Waterhouse, anticipated corporate budget increases for computer equipment around the world suggest that a two-year slowdown in high-tech growth is over.
However, willingness to lay out dollars for the latest in information systems varies greatly. Seventy-seven percent of the Japanese surveyed say they plan to expand their computer installations, compared to only 50 percent of their counterparts in the U.S.
