The Tribune of May 15 quotes Richard Masland of Harvard as saying that genetic engineering and allied technologies are going to allow us ”to create . . . a person who is tall, has blue eyes, and an IQ of 400.” On the same page there is headlined the problem ”between Chicago`s blacks and Jews.” And on page 1 of the entire issue, ”At Goudy, the future dies early.” The inside pages reveal that Goudy is a Chicago elementary school of about 80 percent ethnic enrollment often identified with academic underachievement.

The people who are going to develop those techniques for genetic engineering might better strive for a medium-dark-complexioned person of medium height, perhaps hazel eye color, with a name like Aaron, Jose, Keisha or Rachel-best of all, Aaron Jose-and an IQ of 180, graduating with top grades from the high school equivalent of Goudy and entering IIT in the fall.
