Pitcher Gary Peters bats in No. 6 spot in lineup but is KOd in 4th after going 0 for 2; then, though rallying from 7-run deficit in Game 2, Sox lose 7-6 for 5th straight defeat.

– 1978-Steve Stone fans 7 in 8 innings but loses to A`s 3-1 at Comiskey Park. After game, Sox place Claudell Washington on disabled list and recall outfielder Thad Bosley, 21, from Iowa, where he was hitting .322 with 16 steals in 31 games.

CUBS 1958-Frank Torre hits 3-run homer in 4th and Eddie Mathews a tiebreaking homer in 8th-both off Moe Drabowsky-and Braves win 4-3 in Milwaukee.

– 1968-Ernie Banks hits 2 homers-Nos. 449 and 450 of his career-to break Cap Anson`s club record for total bases and lead Cubs past Giants 4-2 at Wrigley Field. Victory is 5th straight for Bill Hands.

– 1978-Dave Roberts shuts out Cardinals 6-0 on 7 hits in St. Louis as Cubs` winning streak reaches 6. Catcher Dave Rader drives in 4 runs with 2-run triple and 2-run single. Cubs lead NL East by 2 1/2 games.
