In April, 2,410 building permits for single-family homes were issued in the Chicago metropolitan area, down 9.7 percent from 2,410 in April, 1987, according to the Bell Federal Survey of Building. Permits for multifamily units totaled 519 in April, down 50.9 percent from a year earlier, the survey said.
