The secretary of education was not exaggerating when he labeled the Chicago public schools the ”worst in America.” Based on my experience as a student teacher, I have concluded that the No. 1 problem with the schools is discipline! A teacher cannot teach and children cannot learn if students don`t know how to sit in a seat with their mouths closed.

Today`s parents seem to have little control over their children`s behavior. Numerous problems in the public schools could be alleviated if parents taught their children some old-fashioned values. Children go to school without manners or respect for authority. It is the parents`

responsibility to teach their children these basics. Once students have mastered them, perhaps we can begin to build a better public school system.
