As a parent of two students in the Chicago public schools, a volunteer in various school-related organizations for 12 years and a supporter of the public school system of education in this country, I found your series on the Chicago public schools informative, well-written and insightful.
I was, therefore, looking forward to the Sunday, May 29, Tribune which contained your solutions to Chicago`s public school problems.
Your ”fix” utilizing vouchers is totally unfeasible and most likely unconstitutional! You call for a system which would have even more problems than we have now. How are new schools going to suddenly ”appear” to serve 400,000 students?
At a time when the Illinois General Assembly is in the process of making decisions about the future of the Chicago public schools and our city, I expected The Tribune to provide constructive guidance rather than a plan which is nothing other than the total dissolution of the public school concept.
