David Evans certainly had a timely column on June 17 (”Soviet friendliness threatens those for whom peace is hell”). As he says: ”By stacking arms and extending the hand of friendship, the Soviets are raising the specter of massive unemployment for America`s military-industrial-political-academic-d efense-intellectual complex.”

The big news the same day was the federal probe of Pentagon procurement fraud involving ”rampant bribery in government.” Apparently, a number of defense contractors and military procurement officers view defense contracts as an opportunity to make a dishonest dollar.

I may be naive, but I could never understand why it is necessary to provide huge profits for defense contractors. They surely know what would happen to their businesses and themselves if we ever lost a war to Russia.
