I woke the morning of July 1 with a great deal less pride in being a citizen of the State of Illinois than I had went to bed with, after hearing that the White Sox ”subsidy” had passed.

For the State of Illinois to ”subsidize” a poorly managed private enterprise is bad enough, but coming on the heels of the failure to pass the state income tax increase makes it appear that our state government has really got its priorities in a state of grand chaos.

Here we are, at the bottom of the Big 10 in terms of salaries of state university faculty.

We are second or third from the bottom of the 50 states in dollars spent on higher education per dollar of individual earning.

When are we going to wake up to the fact that the University of Illinois will no longer be a pre-eminent university when the faculty has been lost to universities in states that do have their priorities straight?
