I am fed up with the attitude suggested in a recent Chicago Tribune headline: ”Papal omission angers Jews.” I hold no brief in Waldheim`s defense. If there is solid evidence against him, let the accusers bring it forth, and let justice run its course. If not, it`s time to hold the rhetoric. Civilized people do not accept conviction by innuendo.
I am a supporter of Israel. I understand the value of a strong ally in the Middle East. I understand why Israel needs and deserves our help. Even its constant carping will not lessen my support. But the Pope is neither the world`s chief rabbi nor a political instrument of the State of Israel. It is time for Jews worldwide to get off my church`s back.
Before the next Jewish leader whines about the Pope, let him answer why Israel has colonies in Gaza and the West Bank, and treats the colonists so miserably; or why it was necessary to bribe Americans to spy on America and steal our defense secrets.
