Architectural interest is high in the Windy City-so high that the question foremost in many minds during the competition for a central library design was not what was the most practical and fit design for a library but rather what library design would glorify the city`s modern architectural popularity.
The Beebe design that won the competition is aptly symbolic for a library-indoors it looks like a library, rather than like a shopping mall, and outside it symbolizes the past. A library has something to do with the future, but it has even more to do with the past. We Chicagoans owe a gracious salute to the past-without any ties pegged down, we may just balloon away into the future.
