George Bush is stepping up his tactics of trying to discredit Michael Dukakis by calling him a liberal, which epithet went out with the demise of Joseph McCarthy.

Dukakis is supposed to be a liberal because he is hopeful about a U.S.-USSR nuclear agreement, because he doesn`t lie about promising not to raise taxes, because he has a humane attitute toward social programs and education.

The other day in Philadelphia Bush called a piece of reporting about him

”invalid liberal trash” instead of tackling the issue it raised.

When he debated Geraldine Ferraro, instead of talking issues, Bush beat at her until she succumbed. Afterwards, he gleefully announced he had

”kicked a little —,” a chauvinist remark if ever there was one.

He does not stick to issues-he sticks to name-calling. We don`t need that kind of president.
