The Pledge of Allegiance is a legitimate campaign issue, not because it reflects on patriotism or some legal issue, but because the Pledge is a statement of unity. We are a diverse, multi-ethnic and pluralistic nation; we need to share moments when we acknowledge our common ground and honor our mutual heritage, and loyalty.
The Pledge of Allegiance is like swearing to uphold the Constitution when becoming a citizen or being sworn in as the president. Neither of these acts should be viewed as infringing on the freedom of the individual in a nation that ensures that person`s freedom through its law and whose flag represents the very union through which the strength to create such a system grows.
