Evanston`s Mayor Joan Barr announced this week-to the surprise of hardly anyone-that she will seek a second four-year term in next April`s municipal election. ”I want to continue to make Evanston the successful city it has been,” Barr said. ”I want to improve our economy, thus lessening the burden that has faced each of us.”

Barr, who served eight years as an Evanston alderman before becoming mayor, said her first priority is reducing the burdensome real estate taxes in Evanston. ”That requires creativity, persistence and help from everyone, including a united City Council,” she said.
